Are You Looking For A Heartburn Cure?

Millions of Americans suffer from heartburn. Anyone who does can tell you about the pain and discomfort associated with it. Depending on the severity of the problem, finding a cure can be a matter of trial and error. Here are some things you can try at home to eliminate your symptoms before it becomes a serious problem.

Diet and Heartburn

One of the leading causes of heartburn is diet. Therefore one of the best cures would be making changes to your diet. Many people suffer from heartburn when they eat foods that are spicy or high in fat. Things such as citrus fruits and tomatoes have also been known to be a source of heartburn. There are other foods that can contribute to ones heartburn, but they will vary from person to person. Pay close attention to the things you eat so you can identify what the problem foods are. Once you have done that, you can simply eliminate them from your diet, or at least reduce your intake. It’s not surprising to find that heartburn, like many other conditions, can be prevented by drinking plenty of water.

Other Factors

Making lifestyle changes can also contribute to your heartburn cure. Tobacco use can be related to the onset of heartburn. If you smoke or use chewing tobacco, quitting will greatly reduce your onset and frequency of symptoms. Alcohol, in large quantities can also aggravate the symptoms of heartburn.

Another heartburn cure might be to eat smaller meals instead of over-eating. Also, try not to eat to close to bedtime or nap time. Lying down before your food has a chance to digest will make the problem worse.

Many people have problems with acid reflux while they sleep. In fact, sometimes symptoms get so bad that it can wake them up. In this case, gravity can be used as a natural cure. Arrange your bed so that your head is elevated a few inches while you sleep. This will keep the acids from flowing back up into esophagus. Your stomach is predominately on the left side of your body. When you sleep on your left side or your back side, you can encourage heartburn discomfort. So when you lie down to sleep, lay on your right side to minimize your symptoms.

Lacking physical activity in your life could also be contributing to your heartburn syptoms. Another leading contributor to heartburn is being overweight. You can begin to alleviate the problem by starting a simple exercise routine. This will help you loose weight and flush various toxins out of your body.

Antacids can also be used in concert with these other methods, but antacids also interfere with the natural digestive process. Natural stomach acids are used to break down proteins into amino acids that are used by your whole body, so it’s imperitive that you have sufficient hydrochloric acid in your stomach. Consuming antacids over a long period of time can be very unhealthy, so if you find yourself reaching for antacids on a regular basis, you are just masking symptoms, not fixing the problem.

Once you’ve tried all of the above, and still find no relief, it’s time to make a visit to your doctor.
